Listen to our piece on St Peter's Seminary:

This week, we made a trip to St Peter's Seminary near Cardross. This is a remarkable and ghostly building, and really worth a trip. You can get the train to Cardross from Queen St. We took our bikes, but it's only about a 20-minute walk from the station. Here's a map. The green arrow shows where the seminary is.

You can look at GSA's Flickr account here. They've got some photos of St Peter's in the '60s, which gives you an idea of what it used to look like.

And here are some photos from our visit.

Thanks very much to Mark Baines at the Glasgow School of Art for talking to us. He curated an exhibition at the Lighthouse a few years ago on Gillespie, Kidd and Coia. Have a look at the exhibition website to find out more about these architects. There are some very interesting videos.

The public art organisation NVA is looking at redeveloping the site - have a look at their ideas here.

If you're interested in modern architecure and its preservation, check out the 20th Century Society. Here's a link to a fascinating article that appeared in the Guardian a few weeks ago about a housing estate in Elephant and Castle, due to be demolished. It has an interesting approach to the problems of modern housing.

Here is a splendid video about the Festival of Britain in 1951.

We also talked about the London Sound Survey. This is a collection of sound recordings from around London's public palces - street corners, pubs, tunnels, markets, fairs, toilets, public buildings. Do have a look.

Here is a short clip from the old Oliver Postgate programme Tottie. It's about the inhabitants of a dolls' house.

Thanks for listening. Join us next time for our show on the theme of Ghosts.

  1. This is so joyous. I am super-jealous not to have been there. And I wish the bloody university network would let me listen to the actual show!!
